Definition and Function

Definition: The bonnet cable is a mechanical component that connects the car's engine compartment lid to the opening device inside the vehicle, also known as the "engine hood pull cable" or "front cover pull cable."

Function: Its main function is to provide the driver with a convenient and safe way to open the engine compartment lid from inside the vehicle. When the driver pulls the hood release handle inside the car, the pulling force is transmitted through the bonnet cable, unlocking the locking mechanism on the engine compartment lid, allowing the lid to be opened for inspection, maintenance, and servicing of the components inside the engine compartment.

Structure and Composition

Inner wire part: Usually a pull cable made of steel wire, which has high strength and toughness, capable of withstanding a certain pulling force without breaking. The surface of the steel wire is generally treated specially, such as galvanized or coated with anti-rust paint, to improve its corrosion resistance and service life.

Outer protective sleeve: Generally made of flexible plastic or rubber material, its function is to protect the inner steel wire from external environmental erosion and wear, while also allowing the pull cable to slide smoothly within it. The protective sleeve usually has a certain degree of flexibility and wear resistance to adapt to the complex wiring environment inside the vehicle.

Connection components at both ends: Special connection components are equipped at both ends of the bonnet cable. One end is connected to the hood release handle inside the vehicle, usually secured by a metal hook or other suitable connector; the other end is connected to the locking mechanism on the engine compartment lid, and the connection method may vary by vehicle model, but generally also uses some form of hook or fastening device to achieve a reliable connection.

Working Principle

When the driver pulls the hood release handle inside the vehicle, the handle pulls the inner steel wire of the bonnet cable, causing the wire to displace. Since the wire is connected to the locking mechanism on the engine compartment lid, the displacement of the wire is transmitted to the locking mechanism, triggering it to unlock, thereby releasing the lock on the engine compartment lid. At this point, the driver can open the hood by lifting the engine compartment lid.

Common Faults and Solutions

Cable breakage: Due to long-term use or external pulling forces, the inner steel wire of the bonnet cable may break. This will prevent the driver from opening the engine compartment lid normally. In this case, a new bonnet cable needs to be replaced. When replacing, it is important to choose a pull cable that matches the vehicle model and to install it according to the correct installation method.

Cable jamming: If the outer protective sleeve of the bonnet cable is damaged or the inner steel wire is obstructed within the protective sleeve, cable jamming may occur. This can make it difficult to open the hood, or even prevent it from fully opening or closing. In this case, first check if the protective sleeve is damaged or deformed; if necessary, replace the protective sleeve. Also, check if the steel wire is bent or knotted; if so, it needs to be straightened or replaced with a new cable.

Loose connection components: If the connection components at both ends of the bonnet cable become loose, it may prevent the cable from effectively transmitting pulling force, thus affecting the normal opening and closing of the hood. It is necessary to regularly check if the connection components are secure; if loose, they should be tightened or replaced in a timely manner.
